HMP Wellingborough located in Northamptonshire; a former young offenders unit has now evolved to a category C prison, holding up to 572 adult male prisoners. With the idea of further expansion in mind, HMP Wellingborough was looking to relocate and re construct the original production kitchen in order to increase productivity in order to cope with the increased number of inmates. The former production kitchen located in the main wing, managed 600-650 meals, however; with the new fully integrated high productivity equipment in the Electrolux kitchen, they will be capable to do over 800-1000 meals three times a day!

The kitchen boasts a variety of suited ranges from Elco 900 to Thermaline. This in turn configures the central spine of the main island which features 20 grid air o steam combis, back to back with vario mixing kettles. Whereas the second half consists of 100lt bratt pans, running back to back with suited high productivity fryers. This arrangement allows complete flexibly and manoeuvrability, for when the user requires to go from mashing 110 kilos of potatoes to roasting 40 chickens! The Electrolux product range allows the prison to have complete control and flexibility over the equipment that would suit their desired production requirements.

When asked why he chose Electrolux for the refurbishment of the new production kitchen, Catering Manager Peter Dixon explains; ‘We chose Electrolux as they were able to offer us a one stop shop solution to our catering equipment needs. I want to be able to pick up the telephone and call one manufacturer and know that they alone will be able to sort out my query or problem…Electrolux offers exactly that!’ Dixon explains that ‘Electrolux offered us a unique solution with 5 years parts and labour maintenance warranty.’ With this in mind Dixon suggests that this was a solution no other competitor could offer.

Project Manager Tony Bannell, who operates as an independent consultant, was working on behalf of Marriot Construction, a subsidiary of Kier Group with Tony Butler, Business Development Manager of Electrolux Professional. They were tasked to design a production kitchen that met the demanding requirements for the services. Bannell explains; ‘When we were initially approached we were tasked with being able to provide a solution that would not only be cost effective and robust but also met the stringent HMP catering service specification. Whitco catering equipment also based in Northamptonshire, were responsible for the installation of the equipment, which in turn added to the success of the project that is now a complete turnkey operation.

This 380K project took approximately 36 weeks to coordinate & fully install from the initial brief. Following the success of being able to offer a complete kitchen solution, Electrolux Professional has been awarded a number of contracts to refurbish further HMP catering units.
